Who doesn't know about the floating
market in Thailand? For sure you have heard of it at least once in your
lifetime! This is one of their most popular site and activity! Imagine shopping
while traversing a small body of water riding a boat? Ahhh, it's surely going
to be a unique and fun experience!
For one of the most unique shopping
experiences of your life, head over to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. The
world-famous floating market is located 100 kilometers west of the city of
Bangkok, and is well worth a visit as you will get a glimpse of a traditional
way of life that has since become close to extinct in Thailand. The floating
market takes place every morning from 5am-12pm, and the canal becomes crowded
with vendors, shoppers and tourists haggling for the best price.
The vendors sell anything you’d find
in a regular market including produce, spices, Thai dishes, and souvenirs.
However, rather than selling them from stalls, these vendors sell these from
small wooden boats docked alongside the canal. It’s quite an experience to rent
a boat, paddle down the canal and stop along various boats to buy your goods.
The vendors are typically sweet old Thai women who come to the market day in
and day out to sell their product. Each boat is filled to the brim with
colorful friends and vegetables, and the air is filled with the delicious smell
of Thai food cooking.
The best time to get to the floating
market is around 7am, as the tourist crowd rolls in around 9am and that’s when
the canal turns into a traffic jam crowded with boats. The cost to rent a boat
varies depending on whether you want a simple rowboat or a motorboat. For a
rowboat and paddles, expect to pay around 250 Baht, while a motorboat typically
will cost you 700 Baht.
Never miss this on your trip to
Thailand!
