City Center in the Piazza del Duomo and Milan Cathedral

There are many cathedrals in Italy that means you will find several “Piazza del Duomos” which translates to plaza of the cathedral. The most known Piazza del Duomo is in Milan, which serves as the city center in both geographical location and cultural significance to the city.

The Piazzo del Duomo of Milan gets its name from the Milan Cathedral located right in the plaza. Surrounding this plaza are some of the city’s most important buildings, attractions, and shopping. This draws both locals and tourist alike making it the most important location in Milan.

The Piazzo del Duomo will be one of your main destinations in Milan. The plaza is the site of many most popular tourist stops in the City. This includes a statue of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, Milan Cathedral, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and Royal Palace of Milan, to name a few.

All of these sites have historical significance to the city and are a representation of culture in Italy.

After being built, the statue of Victor Emmanuel II was placed here to signal the plaza’s completion.

The Milan Cathedral is one of the most important sites in Milan for tourists. The cathedral, also known as Duomo di Milano, is located in the Piazza del Duomo, giving the plaza its name.

The Milan Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. A notable fact of the cathedral is its construction. Construction on the cathedral lasted over 600 years and with its complexity, it is still being updated and reconstructed today. Over its span of being built, the Milan Cathedral has features influenced by a variety of styles. This is thanks to foreign architects working on the cathedral.

As stunning as the marble exterior is of the Milan Cathedral, the interior is just as elaborate. Throughout the cathedral you will find numerous monuments, artworks, and stained glass windows.

About 200 statues decorate the cathedral atop the many spires. To get the best view of these statues, visitors are allowed access to the cathedrals roof. In addition to seeing up close details, on a clear day you have an amazing view of Milan as well as the Alps in the backdrop.

As with many cathedrals in Italy, appropriate dress is required in order to gain access inside
