Travelers have their fair share of plane
rides. They might be inside the plane at least twice a year. For the first
timers, riding on a plane may be thrilling or exciting, while others seem to be
terrified. However, a travel or not, some people will ride a plane at least
once in their lifetime. With this thought established, have you ever thought of
contacting a disease inside a plane? This is just as possible as acquiring
colds inside a bus. Ahead are the reasons why you are prone to getting
a disease inside a plane and what you can do about it.
Ø Circulating air
Technically, the air you breathe
inside the plane is clean. It involves a certain process in which the fresh air
outside is being vacuumed and filtered until the pressure stabilizes. It is
then cleaned and sanitized before allowing access to the cabin. However, the
clean air that goes in the cabin mixes with the present air that may be
contaminated with airborne diseases. If it mixes together, you could still
inhale flu viruses and many more illnesses. However, since the air is
constantly circulating, there is a smaller chance of getting infection through
the cabin air.
What to do?
Bringing masks with you may help and
keep away disease causing microorganisms.
Ø Bugs
Once you entered the plane, say
hello to the tiniest bugs you can possibly meet. Yes there are possible
presence of bugs in your tray table, headrests, and seats. Would you like them
to get into your skin? These bugs can cause mild to serious conditions on your
skin which may cause itching, swelling and blistering. Furthermore, if they get
inside your system, they may cause systemic infection.
What to do?
Have sanitizing sheets with you.
Wipe all possible surfaces that you will be in contact. This will help in
eliminating the bugs on the fomites .
Furthermore, wear long sleeve clothes if possible to add another layer of
protection.
Ø The aisle and the aisle seats
Think of something most passengers
have contact with? It is the aisle and the aisle seats. Most people walk here,
they uses the top of aisle seats to support their balance while walking the
aisle. The tendency is, whatever microorganisms they have in their body, it
easily spreads to the aisle part of the plane.
What to do?
As much as possible, choose a seat
furthest to the aisle. The chances of acquiring bacteria become less if you
minimize your contact with several passengers.
Ø Lavatory
What is the ratio of one lavatory to
the number of passengers? It is between 1:50 and 1:75. Imagine how many people
have used the toilet bowl and the number of disease carrying microorganisms
that lives in there? You could get it. You could get sick and infected.
What to do?
Bring a sanitizer with you. If
possible wipe the toilet bowl with sanitizer to lessen the amount of bacteria
before you use it.
