Some Advantages of Staying with a Local Host Family

It is beneficial to stay with a local host family if you are traveling as a student, intern, teacher or a volunteer. Not everyone can have this opportunity.  If you are given this opportunity, take advantage of it in order to achieve a more  meaningful cultural experience. It will be a worthwhile experience to stay  with another family in a foreign country.  Below are some of its advantages.

You get familiarized and learn family tradition.   You will basically witness and learn how they do in everyday and ordinary life.  You will see where they sleep in the house, how they do during the meals, how they regards one another and how they communicate.  You will also see their regular routines and their everyday interactions. You will also witness events and occasions in the family like birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and holidays.

They can provide you a warm and comfortable environment.  There are people whom you can ask about things that you may be hesitant to ask from the outside.  You can ask them advice how to stay safe. You can ask them about the appropriate dress to wear or how to get to a certain destination without feeling embarrassed. You know that you are with people who genuinely understand you and willing to help you out.

You can practice the local language.  It is a necessity that you also understand and learn to say basic words and phrases.  The best way to learn is to witness and hear them. The family will  be able to teach you, correct you right away and help you improve the way you speak the language.  You can ask them at any time about a certain word that you wish to translate.  You can learn from the parents down to the youngest child in the host family.

You will be able to live like one  of the locals.  There are times when you will feel you are not a tourist at all.  Being with a local family provides you the security and the feeling that you are just one of them.  You will be able to participate to their weekend activities.  You will be able to cook a local dish, enjoy traditional foods,  watch local TV shows and movies , sleep normally and do other things done by a common local do.

There are people that you can consider a second family. They will be your home while you are away from home.  Your local family may even provide you experiences which you never experienced on your real family and home. They may become one of the best people that you could ever encounter and they may affect and touch your life in a way that you never expected.
